On a quest for sleep.

Sketch day 23 P = Pimento Cheese Spread

For the last 12 years Daphne had eaten her lunch everyday, at her desk.
She had eaten the same thing for everyone of those lunches. Pimento Cheese spread sandwich,
bag of cheesey doodles and a Vernor's to drink.

Today, Friday, in spite of what others might think of her- she was having the hot lunch.

Sketch Day 22 O= Ogelforth

Corporal Ogelforth had played the charm game many nights before.
Come be the life of the party, tell your war stories, wink at the ladies so on and so forth.
For all he cared he'd rather be at home tending to his orchids.

Sketch Day 21 N= Nincompoop

My grandad came from a long line of hard working Pennsylvania Dutch farmers.
He had no time for anyone acting giddy being a scufflaw or a slacker.
If you were , you'd better steer clear lest you be called
a Nincompoop.

Sketch Day 20 M= Mini Mermaid and Misc.

well if you combine the MSG from my General Tso's chicken with waiting for a client's feedback all afternoon you get today's nutty ramblings.

The lady's heads all represent a face that I thought matched an "M" name. So you've
got Myrtle, Mitzi and Mavis. Can you tell who's who? The quotes are just random baloney that came out.

Oh yeah, there's the mermaid ...been swimming in the tea cups again.

Jeff worked long hours at his snowboard shop. After a hard day
he looked forward to coming home to spend some time with Lisa his cat,
a little glass of Chardonnay and to sit and watch the lamp.

Sketch Day 17 J = Jam Session

Recently I happened to be in a small town music store -I was looking for a Fender tube amp for my son and was hoping to maybe stumble across one that someone might think was nothing special and sell it for real cheap (no such luck..)

In the course of my looking around I couldn't help but notice that my salesman had that classic rocker vibe to him. One of those guys that you weren't quite sure how old they were, someone who knew everything, about every rock band before 75'. I think music died for him shortly thereafter.
As we talked amps and guitars, he proceeded to tell me he was already late for tonight's Jam session. He was probably going to hear it from the rest of the boys.

He went on to tell me how at one time he himself almost made it big in the music business but the drummer got married and their singer went on to college.... I heard about how he knew someone who knew Hendrix, how he owned half of a drumstick from Clapton's drummer. Showed me an original newspaper article about Woodstock.....on and on he went. I loved it .

One can only imagine how many of these guys there are in every small town everywhere.

Hope he made to the jam.

Sketch Day 16 I = Injury

Yeah, so the next time you think about a flyover the Bot house whilst there having a barbecue....I would reconsider.
You will definitely wind up with an I-N-J-U-R-Y.

Sketch Day 15 H= Harpy

Driving to CCAD this morning at around 6:50.....I was thinking about today's classes and of course that this very day was "H" day.
After mulling over a variety of ideas during the afternoon I boiled my choices down to Harpy, Hamster and Hunchback.
Because I've never drawn a hellcat chick from Greek mythology with wings and talons, Harpy became the logical choice.
Feathers are ruuuff drawing.

The Hamster came calling late. No really,
this guy showed up at 11PM on my doorstep and demanded that I draw him.
I couldn't help but notice he was driving a black 78'Camaro SS . I could hear Ratt blaring from his 8 track player. He reeked of Old English cologne.
I wasn't about to argue with him. "But he's just a hamster" you say.

Yeah... you tell him that.

Bed.

Sketch Day 14 G = Gomer Pyle

So, after seeing yesterday's french poodle drawing my wife thinks I've lost my mind. Hey, I just draw it and float it out there.

Today it's Gomer Pyle USMC.

I've been trying to make myself stay away from using alot of hard reference just because I need/like the whole "concept" challenge. This was different. I had a great photo of Jim Nabors so I went for it.Not sure it's 100% what I wanted but...that's OK.
also, did you know Gomer has.......freckles? Shazam!

Lotsa luck to you and yours.

Sketch Day 13 F= French Poodle

It all started as just being neighborly.
"Hey come on over for a Fresca and watch the Wheel" kinda neighborly.
Now they just wouldn't go away.
And today of all days, a day when he was going off to meet his future in- laws
the last thing he needed, besides the dumb zit, was a case of the butterflies.

Sketch Day 12 E = Ed & elevate

well a two'fer for this evening's sketch.
First my bro-in-law Ed who hates having his picture taken,
and the word "elevate". Must be some magical doo-doo he's got in that bag.

Sketch Day No.11 D= Dress (or daredevil..)

I had a great word for my letter "D" today ...daredevil.
Had all kinds of cool little image nuggets floating around but when it came time to actually sit and sketch something, nothing really materialized except...dress.

So be it.

Maybe she's a daredevil?

Sketch Day No.10 C= Cactus

I went to bed early last night because of a monster all day long headache. I wasn't really that tired so... I decided to flip through a book on Salvador Dali that I had nearby. As a result of the headache and book this popped into my head this morning.

Sketch-a-Day 10 B = Brandywine

As lousy as I feel, I couldn't let the day pass without a small tribute to the great Andrew Wyeth who passed away today. So much great and important art from one guy.
Thanks Mr. Brandywine.

Bed.

Sketch-a-Day No.9 A is for Acorns & Albinos & Argyle

So.. I'm going to do the alphabet for the next 20 something days. I hope to steer away from the mundane baloney you ordinarily see and try do some fun images. As it's still early in the eve , I just might jump on another idea for letter A.

Great stuff from the group so far and if I knew why my comments weren't showing up on your sketches I would leave more! I'll figure it out-

I snuck in another sketch. The albino in argyle. My wife said it looked like my daughter's friend Amy so, fair enough: Amy the albino in argyle-

Sketch-a-Day No.6

Key word "tried" Ah well, the beat goes on tomorrow.

Sketch-a-Day No.5

Just found his favorite ZZ Top vinyl now has a huge scratch in it. Goodbye "LaGrange".
The wife shrunk his favorite orange V neck sweater.
The Pick n' Pay was out of honey roasted cashews.

Sigh...

Sketch-a-Day No.4

Sketch -A-Day No.3

I've long been a fan of the work of Travis Louie and his beautiful paintings of odd looking monsters. This is my own sketch attempt at a "Louie-style Monster" and it was great fun to do.

Awesome work from all my sketch-a-day compadres- welcome aboard Josh Peters!

Sketch-a-Day No.2

The girl image came from a great piece of 60's reference I had . Nice symmetry.
The seagull is part of a painting I have drawn up and will be next on my list of "to do" pieces . This idea originated from a small image of a seagull I had from a children's book . I thought it had potential and months later "Steampunk Pete" is born!

Sketch-A-Day No.1

I'm starting a sketch a day exercise with some of my former students and this should be fun. Here's the first . My Miss Mod Painting is almost complete and I already have ideas for 4 other new pieces..... so stay tuned.
